It’s a December morning.
We’re approaching the shortest day of the yr within the UK, and I need to take pleasure in each little bit of the sunshine. So I’m up at 6.30am, strolling via my small coastal city at nighttime to achieve the ocean. I move by the squat stone circle of Deal Fortress, then comply with the shoreline to the quite grander fortress at Walmer. Commissioned by Henry VIII, these buildings have stood guard over this stretch of the English coast for over 500 years.
I’d hoped for a repeat of the earlier two mornings, when the daybreak colored each sky and sea in wonderful shades of crimson, pink, purple and gold, and the gulls rose up from the seashore in noisy, joyful crowds to greet it.
However this morning daylight creeps in with out drama.
The clouds are low and heavy. As I stroll, the sky merely fades from black to a bleak, metallic gray. Many of the birds stay on the shingle, drowsy and confused.
Nonetheless, it’s a light morning, so on the fortress I flip up the steep, muddy monitor that leads as much as the chalk grasslands of Hawkshill…
